HOLT RECREATION GROUND – POLICY FOR USE

Background

Holt Recreation Ground was purchased by public subscription in thanks to those from Holt who served in World War 2.  The field was formally placed under the ownership of Holt Parish Council with a covenant stating that:

“…….. the Council will for ever hereafter maintain the said property as a recreation ground for use of the inhabitants of the Parish of Holt”

The area surrounding Dawes Pond was purchased later by the Parish Council when the cottage, Frogmore, was demolished.

The boundary of the land owned by the parish is shown on the map outlined in red.  There are no public rights of way (public footpaths) across the land.

Usage and responsibility

Over time, the usage and responsibilities for maintenance of the land has and will continue to change. Currently:

  • The areas outlined in blue are formally leased to the Holt Sports and Recreation Club who maintain and control those areas for the duration of their lease.
  • The area outlined in green is similarly leased to Holt Bowls Club.

All the remaining ground including the Dawes Pond area, the playpark, the small enclosed tarmacked area (Court 3) and the balance of the grassed area are maintained by the Parish Council for the benefit of residents generally.   They are free for villagers to use for informal activities whilst respecting other users, the state of the ground, the law and the bylaws which are posted on the pavilion wall.

The football pitch is subject to an agreement between the Parish Council and Holt Football Club giving them preferential use for organised football matches.  In addition, the use of the pitch for training purposes prior to the start of the football season and ongoing during the season (currently Wednesday evenings).

To avoid clashes, people wanting to arrange formal activities or events on the Recreation Ground, or to use the pavilion, should obtain the prior approval of the Parish Council.
